Developing reading skills – questions to ask

Encourage your child to recall elements of the books/ stories

  • What has happened so far?
  • Who was it who thought/did/wanted ……etc?
  • Where did…….?
  • What happened when…….?

Encourage your child to think about the writer’s intention

  • Why did the writer use that word?
  • What do you think the writer wants you to feel?
  • Why do you think the writer ended the chapter there?

Encourage your child to think beyond the literal

  • Why do you think that character did that?
  • What do you think made them feel that way?
  • How do you know they are scared/evil/puzzled?
  • How can you tell how they’re feeling?
  • What does this behaviour/choice/way of dressing tell you about the
    character?

Encourage your child to give a personal response

  • How does it make you feel?
  • Which part do you like?
  • What do you think of this character?
  • Do you think that was a good idea?
  • What do you think of the way it is written

Encourage your child to give reasons (ask them ‘why?’) and if possible to support their views with examples from the text.
